Giant Food Stores set to begin conversion of 15 former Genuardi's in Greater Philadelphia

Carlisle, PA – Giant Food Stores today announced it will begin the conversion of 15 former Genuardi’s Family Markets in the greater Philadelphia area on June 29 to Giant Food Stores. During the conversion process, five stores at a time will temporarily close for about a week. The three-phase staggered approach is expected to be completed on July 22.

“During the three weeks of conversion, we will strive to minimize the amount of disruption to our customers,” said Rick Herring, president. “Giant is committed to this multi-million dollar investment to improve the overall shopping experience in these 15 stores to meet the quality, selection and savings that customers have come to expect from Giant.”

While the extent of the remodels and addition of new amenities will vary by store, each store will reopen as a Giant Food Store and receive updated refrigeration systems, improved lighting and new
signage. In addition, all 15 stores will be thoroughly cleaned and painted.

On June 15, Giant received approval from the Federal Trade Commission for the acquisition of 15 supermarkets from Genuardi’s. Giant has offered employment to 1,700 former Genuardi’s store associates – nearly all who applied for employment with Giant at the stores purchased. Giant also previously announced it will hire approximately 900 additional part-time associates to support its new stores.
