Giant Food celebrates historic 80th anniversary

Giant Food is celebrating its 80th anniversary on February 6. To mark this major milestone all 169 neighborhood Giant Food location in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia invited customers and community members for a piece of complimentary birthday cake from 12:00 to 4:00pm.

“On this historic anniversary, Giant is honored to invite our valued customers and community members to celebrate our 80-year history,” said Gordon Reid, President, Giant Food of Landover, Md. “Our customers remain at the heart of our business, and we love helping our customers save money, save time and eat well.”

On February 6, 1936, N.H. Cohen and Sam Lehrman opened Washington D.C.’s first grocery store. The flagship Giant Food, located at Georgia Avenue and Park Road, would mark the beginning of an 80-year legacy of quality, service, and value that has spanned generations and continues to this day. Over the eight decades since it opened its first store, Giant has proudly supported the communities it serves through food donations to provide hunger relief, offering products and services to help its customers stay healthy, and building energy efficient stores to protect the environment. At the same time, Giant has and continued to provide top tier quality customer service, pioneer in-store and digital technologies and source local, sustainable products.

Giant will highlight significant events from its rich history over the course of 2016. Kicking off in February 2016, customers will be greeted with 80th anniversary themed promotions and special events. A new, commemorative logo has been introduced in honor of the anniversary and will be prominently displayed throughout the year.
