Zaandam, the Netherlands, May 23, 2024 – Ahold Delhaize is entering a sponsorship with The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), an international non-profit organization dedicated to hunger relief while reducing food loss and waste. Starting in July 2024, Ahold Delhaize will contribute to GFN's mission of supporting community-led food banks, which play a crucial role in redirecting surplus, nutritious food to those who need it most.
A substantial part of Ahold Delhaize’s daily work evolves around food. It only makes sense that Ahold Delhaize’s local brands work closely together with local food banks, to provide food donations and other resources. By working together with GFN, Ahold Delhaize can contribute and build on the quality of its local brands' numerous community initiatives. Ahold Delhaize will provide financial support and share expertise to help GFN build capacity, offer technical assistance, and drive innovation, making food banks more effective and resilient in the nine countries where Ahold Delhaize’s brands operate.
President and CEO of Ahold Delhaize Frans Muller said: “The role of our brands’ stores goes beyond grocery shopping. For many years, they have actively partnered with local food banks, creating a positive impact in their communities. Partnering with The Global FoodBanking Network allows us to further contribute to addressing food insecurity and prioritizing healthy, nutritious and sustainable food. The contribution of GFN and its network of local food banks is invaluable in giving families and individuals a better and healthier future.”
“Food banks are rooted in their communities, which makes them key actors in reducing food insecurity and minimizing food waste and the corrosive impact it has on the climate,” said Lisa Moon, President and CEO of The Global FoodBanking Network. “Thoughtful partnerships like this one with Ahold Delhaize fortify those community bonds by providing impactful support and expertise that will help food banks ensure that more food ends up on families' tables. Together we can nourish people and the planet.”
The announcement of the partnership coincides with the presentation of Ahold Delhaize's new Growing Together strategy. A key component of this strategy is supporting the transition to a healthy and sustainable food system, ensuring that healthy and sustainable food is accessible and available to all.
The Global FoodBanking Network works with partners in over 50 countries to alleviate hunger and tackle climate change at the same time. Our partner food banks work with 50,000 local agencies and are supported by over 400,000 volunteers. Last year, we provided food to more than 32 million people. We are fixing the global food system so it functions as it should: nourishing people and the planet together. More: www.foodbanking.org.
