Giant Food offers healthy ideas for kids and families

LANDOVER, Md. – With new year’s resolutions still fresh in customers’ minds, Giant Food of Landover, Md. is continuing its commitment to helping individuals, children, and families make healthy choices and eat better in the year ahead.

Now through January 31, customers who purchase any ten products bearing Giant’s exclusive “Healthy Ideas” symbol in a single transaction, using their Giant card, will automatically be entered into the neighborhood grocer’s Healthy New Year Free Produce for a Year sweepstakes. Most fresh produce items qualify as Healthy Ideas purchases. The Healthy Ideas blue and green product labeling system helps customers identify healthy options throughout the store. In order to be classified with the Healthy Ideas distinction, a product must meet certain criteria developed by a team of registered dietitians related to total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar amounts. Details and complete sweepstakes rules can be found in-store at the customer service center.

“The health and wellness of our customers and our communities is a main priority for us at Giant,” said Jamie Miller, manager, public and community relations. “Through partnerships and in-store programs such as Healthy Ideas shelf tags and store tours, we’re committed to providing tools and tips to make healthy choices easier choices.”

While shopping, customers are encouraged to pick up the latest edition of Kid Healthy Ideas, a free health and wellness magazine, available at local Giant stores where weekly circulars are found. The 12-page publication is geared toward children ages eight to 12 and features health-related educational articles, games, and recipes written by nutritionists, expert associates, and community health partners. Giant’s winter edition of Healthy Ideas magazine is also now available in-store and online at www.giantfood.com/healthyideas.

Further, Giant, in partnership with Field Trip Factory is again offering free Kid Healthy Ideas store tours, giving teachers, parents, and troop leaders a fun and interactive way to teach children how to make healthier choices and reinforce nutrition and healthy living curriculum taught in local schools. In 2012, Giant hosted nearly 500 tours reaching more than 8,700 youngsters.
