July 17, 2023 – Last week our great local U.S. brand, The GIANT Company, joined the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture on its sixth annual PA (Pennsylvania) Urban Agriculture Week tour at York Fresh Food Farm, to announce its $200,000 commitment to grow food system resiliency through the Pennsylvania Farm Bill Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grant program.
The Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grant Program provides funding as a reimbursement grant to eligible applicants seeking to improve urban agriculture infrastructure in Pennsylvania. These grants will build out the infrastructure of urban agriculture by investing in the food system, filling gaps, encouraging entities to work together, finding ways to bring operations to a greater scale, overcoming food deserts, and opening opportunities for people to become social entrepreneurs.
Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding joined Dave Lessard, Vice President, The GIANT Company, Omnichannel Merchandising Fresh, for a check presentation and to tour the farm’s efforts to improve food access in its community.

And urban agriculture is critical to this narrative – it is growing food security, creating healthier communities, addressing food system inequities, and connecting families around the dinner table,” said Lessard. “We are so proud to support this year’s Urban Agriculture Infrastructure Grant Program as part of our 100th anniversary celebrations, as these dollars will help grow resilient, food secure communities for generations to come.”
