June 26, 2018 – Giant Food Stores has giant-size growth plans. The brand announced yesterday a $22 million (€18.8 million) investment in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, that includes launching a new e-commerce hub, completing four store remodels, lowering prices across Giant locations county-wide and opening a new fuel station. The e-commerce hub will drive the development of a former Giant property in Lancaster City and bring approximately 150 new jobs to the community.
“We look at this e-commerce hub as an investment not just in property, but in the people of Lancaster who have waited too long to hear news from us about our future plans,” said Giant/Martin’s President Nicholas Bertram.
The new hub (shown as a conceptual illustration above) will serve as a grocery delivery center and will be designed with a unique format that offers curbside pickup orders, where online orders are delivered right to customers’ cars parked directly outside. The format will also feature a walkable pickup point to meet the growing local demand for online grocery. The innovative hub will encompass 38,000 square feet, enabling Giant and its online grocery partner Peapod to serve up to 40% more shoppers.
“We’re seeing double digit growth in online ordering and grocery delivery,” said Nick, noting the facility will be the fifth Giant has opened with Peapod in Pennsylvania. “We’re excited because the e-commerce hub will allow us to increase capacity quickly.”
New store features – and savings
The first phase of this investment is now complete and included extensive remodels at four stores in Lancaster County. The remodeled stores include new features that make shopping and saving easier, and reflect the brand’s focus on fresh, quality products sold at affordable prices and delivered with caring, friendly service.
Further, Giant has made savings easier for Lancaster customers with lower prices on thousands of items, especially own-brand products. “We’re committed to bringing more value every day to our Lancaster customers so we zeroed in our most popular products that families purchase every week,” Nick said.
Giant additionally has broken ground on its new off-site fuel facility in Lititz, Pennsylvania. The facility – one of four others in Lancaster County – is on track to open in August.
