In April 2016, we celebrated the grand opening of the Stop & Shop Green Energy Facility at the Freetown, Massachusetts Distribution Center. Converting inedible food into energy, the facility is a major step forward in our ambition to further reduce our food waste.
The facility puts our trash to work for us: inedible food from all our Stop & Shop New England-brand stores is taken to the Green Energy Facility, where an anaerobic digestion system turns it into clean energy. The system is expected to provide enough energy to power up to 40% of the 1.1 million square-foot Freetown Distribution Center.
A cleaner end for inedible food
“As a responsible retailer, one of our top priorities is reducing our environmental footprint, specifically through the conversion of food that would otherwise go into a landfill,” says Mark McGowan, President, Stop & Shop New England. “As part of doing business, our stores generate inedible food that cannot be donated. Converting it into clean energy is part of our commitment to be a responsible retailer and a better neighbor.”
In 2016, the Green Energy facility processed over 40 million pounds (over 20,000 tons) of inedible food, to create 4,442 (MW) of electricity.
