Planning and cooking nutritious meals can be a challenge, but not with our groundbreaking “Guiding Stars” program, which was founded 10 years ago by Delhaize America.
This program makes it easy for shoppers to choose the right foods for a nutritious diet, and keeps them coming back for more. Today, “Guiding Stars” is North America's leading nutrition guidance program.
Easy as 1-2-3
With “Guiding Stars”, consumers can quickly and easily compare products to choose the ones that offer the best nutritional value. The program’s patented, published algorithm, based on USDA* and other dietary guidelines, scientifically and objectively evaluates foods and beverages for nutritional value.
The most nutritious products are awarded stars - one, two or three - representing good, better and best nutritional value. “Guiding Stars” doesn’t tell consumers what to buy, but instead points them toward foods that have more vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and whole grains – and less fat, cholesterol, sugar and sodium. It is all about choice: and with over 100,000 rated foods, making nutritious choices is now simple and fun.
It really works!
Independent studies have shown that “Guiding Stars” prompts shoppers to choose the most nutritious foods. “One of the keys to its success is how simple it is to understand,” explains Jim McBride, Director of the Guiding Stars Licensing Company, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize. “As customers make their way down the aisle of a supermarket, consider the options in a cafeteria, or plan homemade meals, “Guiding Stars” serves as a visual reminder to achieve good nutrition. Most importantly, it really works, and that makes us proud.”
The “Guiding Stars” system evolves as foods and dietary standards develop. Delhaize America’s dedicated Scientific Advisory Panel monitors the most up-to-date Dietary Guidelines for Americans, as well as recommendations of leading health organizations, and adjusts the program according to latest findings. The program already reaches beyond supermarket shelves. For example, thanks to its licensing program, “Guiding Stars” is used in high schools, colleges, hospitals and corporate cafeterias, as well as in 2,500 stores in the U.S. and Canada. It’s a prime example of how we fulfill our promise to do what is right for our customers. Read more.
