Hannaford's energy initiatives were spotlighted at Efficiency Maine's Annual Energy Symposium when the brand was presented with the Philip C. Hastings Award, named in honor of Efficiency Maine's founding director and presented annually to "the individual or organization whose exemplary efforts have furthered Maine's goals of energy efficiency and environmental enhancement."

In making the announcement, Efficiency Maine – an independent administrator for energy efficiency programs – cited "the unparalleled leadership that Hannaford has shown on energy efficiency within its own industry and among all commercial customers in the state."

Indeed, Hannaford is committed to cutting energy usage and reducing its carbon footprint as part of an overall focus on sustainability through initiatives such as LED lighting that brightens displays while saving energy, display case "night covers" and cold case doors that help ensure product quality by maintaining consistent temperatures. Energy savings also help the brand keep costs down and allow reinvestment in the business.

Hannaford received a similar award from Efficiency Vermont last summer when it was named a 2016 Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency by the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships.
