Our commitment to safety doesn’t stop at the doors of our supermarkets. With over 6,500 stores worldwide, we are active users of road transport, which offers a fast, convenient way to make sure our customers find the products they want in our aisles.
At the same time, an estimated 1.3 million people are killed on roads each year, so we strive to do our part to make road traffic safer, for our truck drivers and everyone else.
An active approach
Setting a great example, Alfa Beta in Greece has obtained ISO 39001 certification for excellence in road traffic safety. The brand already had a number of measures in place to ensure safe transport and delivery of goods, as well as an excellent safety record. As it was already close to ISO certification Alfa Beta decided to take the next step: develop and implement an appropriate road traffic safety (RTS) management system.
Research and experience worldwide have shown the impact an RTS can have on drastically reducing traffic deaths and serious injuries. The requirements laid out in ISO 39001 include speed, vehicle condition, driver awareness and skills. Alfa Beta developed policies, objectives and action plans; specifically, Alfa Beta drivers focused on improved their driving and loading techniques, while technicians enhanced their truck servicing skills.
The ISO 39001 certification shows Alfa Beta’s commitment to the well-being of its associates and other road users. By making working conditions safer, processes more efficient, and cutting fuel consumption and costs, Alfa Beta has become a better place to work, and a better neighbor.
