Zaandam, the Netherlands – For the past two years, Albert Heijn has been offering free homework classes to associates still in school.
Amsterdam Mayor receives high school students.
On June 17, 2014, this group was commended at Amsterdam City Hall by the city’s Mayor Eberhard van der Laan and Cees van Vliet, Albert Heijn’s Director of Stores and Distribution. After the summer holidays, Albert Heijn stores in Utrecht will also start their own free homework tutoring service.
Many high-school students in the Netherlands have part-time jobs at Albert Heijn, and working and learning are both key ingredients for a great future. And an even better future if students actually finish school, which is why Albert Heijn and JINC have teamed up to offer student associates free homework classes, as befits a company aspiring to do better every day for its associates and to motivate and retain them. JINC provides homework tutors, typically university students, who help AH associates do their homework and so give the young a head start in the labor market.
Investing in the future
At a special meeting in the Council Room on the afternoon of Tuesday 17 June 2014, Cees van Vliet and Mayor Eberhard van der Laan commended the 70 Albert Heijn associates who have frequently made use of free homework classes in the past twelve months.
Cees van Vliet commented: “Albert Heijn wants to be the best employer for part-time associates, and a place that makes it easy and fun to combine the two. Of course, the key will always be to leave school with that all-important qualification, so we encourage our associates to finish their schools and studies as best we can. I’m really proud that you’ve used our stores’ homework classes to your advantage in this past year, proving that you really want to invest in school and your futures.”
All associates received an AH homework certificate and AH ‘graduation hat’ at the end of the meeting.
Utrecht pilot project
Taking a leaf from the Amsterdam book, franchisees Arjan and Jolanda Konincks at the Amsterdamsestraatweg store in Utrecht are about to run a homework classes pilot project, together with two Albert Heijn stores at the Amsterdamsestraatweg and Doornburglaan. Their store associates will be able to sign up for free homework classes after the summer.Back to index
