Working together to reduce food waste: 10x20x30 initiative one year on

September 24, 2020 - Last year, Ahold Delhaize became a founding partner of the World Resources Institute's (WRI) 10x20x30 initiative, which brings together 10 global food retailers who have each committed to engage with 20 of their priority suppliers to halve their rates of food loss and waste by 2030. Today, WRI announced that, over the first year, this group of retailers has engaged a total of almost 200 suppliers to join the effort and address this global challenge.

Each year, one-third of all food produced in the world is lost or wasted, leading to $940 billion in economic losses and causing 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, one in nine people is undernourished. The COVID-19 pandemic has only increased the urgency of addressing food loss and waste as part of ensuring a sustainable future for our business and for people around the world.

“Reducing food waste is the right thing to do to improve our business, our climate, and our food security. Therefore, it’s heartening to see that the 10x20x30 initiative is resonating across the broader food industry and that retailers and suppliers are committing to concrete actions to reduce food waste,” said Ahold Delhaize CEO Frans Muller.
