Ahold Delhaize commits to Science Based Targets

March 1, 2019 – Ahold Delhaize announces it has signed up for the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to help set climate targets that are in line with the global need to reduce carbon emissions.

The framework, which has been developed by WWF, CDP, WRI and UN Global Compact, helps specify how much and how quickly organizations need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to stay within the 1.5°C maximum rise in global temperature.

As the company sets its new climate emission targets within the next 24 months, it will examine reduction actions related to refrigeration, energy, transportation, and product supply chains.

“We are fully committed to reduce carbon emissions using the leading global framework, and thereby to play a part in addressing the global climate crisis. As a leading global grocery retailer, we see emissions reduction as a necessary part of creating more sustainable food systems, that are better for both people and the planet,” says Frans Muller, CEO Ahold Delhaize.

In the next 24 months, Ahold Delhaize will develop and submit carbon emission reduction targets to the SBTi. When approved, Ahold Delhaize will fully commit to those targets. In the meantime, we will continue to work toward our 2020 climate targets: reducing the CO2 emissions per square meter of sales area by 30% (from 2008) and reducing the average GWP (Global Warming Potential) of refrigerants to 2230.
